How much boating equipment, kit, and gadgets are needed depends on the size of your boat.
This is a list of boating equipment basics that most sailors would agree every boat should possess:
- Life jackets for everyone on board.
- A killercord is used on smaller boats or open boats. It clips to the skipper’s clothes or can be wrapped around the leg/wrist. This killcord will cut the engine in the event that you are thrown overboard.
- Radar reflectors that make your boat more visible on radar to other vessels.
- VHF radio is useful for communication between boats or to contact the Coastguard in case of emergency. A handheld radio is useful even if your boat already has a VHF. It can be used to communicate with other boats or to contact the Coastguard if needed.
- Compass: If all else fails, you can still follow a precise direction.
- Organise RYA Powerboat Courses. These courses will teach you all you need to know to operate a boat safely and efficiently. For more information on RYA Powerboat Courses, visit Solent Boat Training.
- A navigation tool or a navigation aid.
- An anchor. Thai is essential for making stops.
- Basic safety equipment, such as flares to attract attention, a first-aid kit and a Grab Bag with essentials that can be stored in a locker.
On board, it’s a good idea to keep a good knife and some basic tools, such as a boat hook or a bucket.
