If you have decided that you want decking laid in your garden to add a useful space for relaxing or socialising, you’ll soon discover that it’s not quite as easy as picking any old wood. It could be that some gardens might need different types of decking than others. Also, some decking types suit a particular need and maybe not another.
Softwood
Softwood trees grow faster than hardwoods, so it’s generally easier to get hold of softwood. A common variety is pine. It is naturally softer than hardwood and so more probe to damage. It will also require a little more maintenance over time, but a major benefit is its cost. It tends to be cheaper than hardwood. Find out more about Southampton Timber Merchants at a site like Timbco
Hardwood
Oak is the most popular of the hardwoods and is used in a wide variety of construction projects. Whilst being more expensive, hardwoods are the most durable and require the least maintenance. Because it is harder, it is not so easy to work with and will most likely require professional installation. It can also have a lifespan of up to 50 years!
Composite
This option provides the advantages of both hard and softwood. It is produced with a combination of plastic and wood which means it offers waterproofing, extreme durability and comes in a wide range of designs. It can have a lifespan of over half a century but does come with a fairly hefty price tag.
